Framework conditions for innovation

Overview

Fisheries and seafood industry is one of the traditionnal economic activities in the 2 seas area which have shaped the local developpement patterns over centuries. Today this activity faces challenges such as sea livestock depletion related to human activity and climate change, growing global market competition, legal barriers, and difficulty to create and maintain jobs (aquatic products profession do not attract). However, innovative solutions could be brought to the industry in order to tackle this challenges and boost the economic and social development of the water basin (coastal and inland) zones. AQUIMER is an innovation cluster helping the industry to respond to the increasing seafood demand in the condition. By boosting innovation throughout the value chain, AQUIMER’s goal is to foster the competitiveness of the companies and put the aquatic products in the heart of the food of the future. OUR RESOURCES: • A partnership of complementary skills: businesses, research laboratories, technical centres, training providers and funding managers • A network facilitating best practices exchange and information sharing • An intelligence centre focused on the technical, economical and legal aspects of the sustainable exploitation of aquatic products

Interest to cooperate

AQUIMER is interested to be involved in research and networking projects helping to design and validate technological, legal, and methodology solutions for the aquatic products industry. Some examples: Fisheries: In the conditions of the depleting resources the fisheries activity needs to find a good balance between the profitable and low impact activity. The topics such as demonstration of new fishing, selection or shipping technologies; methods of evaluation and management of the fish stocks; developing sustainable fishing scenarios. Aquaculture: the aquaculture is the post promising way to complete and diversify the food resources coming from fisheries. Here the challenges would be: develop circular efficient farms in coastal and inland zones; developing solutions against pathology; develop algae and seaweed culture; explore the interspecies synergies. Transformation and processing: The transformation of the aquatic product to final product is a key step, when the products gets most of its value. The final product should respond to the consumer preferences such being healthy, easy to prepare and to eat. At the same time the transformation process should respond to the quality and safety requirements. We are interested in the development of new efficient transformation processes and tools. Co products: In the current transformation processes, not the 100% of the biomass is used. The co products (skin, skeleton or viscera, etc.) have a potential of a more optimal use in animal and human nutrition, cosmetics and green chemistry.
