    About

    Common challenge

In this project, ArcelorMittal led a partnership formed by Belgian, British, French, and Dutch partners to prove a potential reduction of CO2 emissions (30-45%) across the major energy-intensive steel sector by demonstrating an innovative technology solution to separate CO2 streams and valorise CO and potentially CO2 in the future. Two valorisation routes were decided to be studied during the project, i.e. ethanol as a drop-in transportation fuel and synthetic naphtha as a drop-in chemical building block. Many EU countries were lagging behind in relation to their EU2020 targets. This reduction could not be achieved by step changes and incremental process optimisation, hence it called for disruptive technologies that cross borders and industrial boundaries. This was the approach adopted by CARBON2VALUE.

    Main Achievements

The main achievement of the Carbon2Value project was the finalisation of important deliverables on technical reporting and LCA analysis, using the final test results of the pilot installation.

At the end of the project, successful virtual workshops were organised where the results of the project were presented. These received a lot of positive international attention, and broad participation from industry, policy makers and various stakeholders.

The DOW separation pilot has been prepared to connect to the Steel2Chemicals pilot that was to be installed end of 2021, thus already starting the next step of the pathway development to produce naphtha from steel process gases. Steel2Chemicals has received support from ERDF local funding.

Additionally, the Carbon2Value project has made significant process on the design and development of the pilot line to treat steel waste gases in view of valorising CO. The DOW separation pilot was successfully started up. After the start-up tests were performed on the pilot to check the CO2 removal efficiency comparted to the model prediction. The initial tests were very promising and the performance in agreement with the expectations.

The Carbon2Value pilot was officially launched on the 18th March 2019. ArcelorMittal and Dow Benelux are starting trials with a new pilot installation at the company premises of ArcelorMittal Gent, that separates carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) from gasses produced during the steelmaking process.

At the University of Lille there were first successfully conducted experiments and produced results on performance parameters to capture CO2 from flue gas analog using Hydrate-Based Separation Process, which have resulted in multiple scientific papers.

Dissemination events were organised in 2021 to a wide audience. Papers on the results have been submitted to scientific journals.

    Testimonial

There is a core value in having a heavy industry – like a steel company – as a pivot to bring circulas use of carbon across to society, and therefore find new ways of creating value and bringing and bringing many more possibilities alive.
