Combatting energy poverty through appliance renting

Social innovation

Overview

1/3 of families suffering from energy poverty are using old energy wasting household appliances. Doing so they have a high energy consumption, causing high energy bills leading to more energy debts and less family budget. Because of the low family budget they can't afford to buy new energy saving appliances. Samenlevingsopbouw West-Vlaanderen (a community building organization) launches together with Bosch Home Appliances a project to cut this vicious circle. This project uses the basics of circular economy (product service) to tackle energy poverty. We rent energy saving appliances to people who can't afford to buy a new one. People can rent up to 10 years, service and guarantee during those 10 years are included. Our baseline is '10 years without worries'. We aim to have a monthly rental fee that is around the monthly cost of the electricity use of the old energy wasting appliance.

Bloc 1

Overall objective

Tackle fuel poverty through a social innovative project that reduces the energy consumption (and co2-emission). This in co-creation between a social non-profit organization and a business profit company. The whole project is situated inside the circular economy.

Bloc 2

Outputs

From January 2018 on we'll start a first experiment with up to 100 household appliances (fridges, freezers, freezer/fridge combination, washing machines, dryer and dishwasher). This project will start in the 'Westhoek' area (a rural area in Western-Flanders, Belgium), also known as 'Flanders Fields'.

* create a new instrument to tackle fuel poverty * reduce the total cost of having an appliance for people in energy poverty * lower the total energy consumption (& co2 emissions) * lower the cost of social programs * experiment with social innovation and co-creation between social sector and business sector *create a working instrument that uses circular economy to reduce poverty * raise the level of home comfort for people in energy poverty * lower the energy debts of people in energy poverty
