Technological innovation

Overview

Traffic jams in cities and urbanized environments constitute 40% of all accidents and 20% of all traffic related fatalities. Automating traffic intersection has a huge potential in reducing the number of accident, emissions and increases the infrastructure utilization. The goal of the project is to develop the necessary automation and communication hardware for intersection automation. The aim is to validate the developed technology through experiments on a controlled setting.

Description
Bloc 1

Overall objective

Overall objective is to develop the necessary control and communication protocols, algorithms and hardware required for a fully automated traffic intersection.

Bloc 2

Outputs

- development of required software - development of required hardware - life testing on a circuit/controlled environment

Bloc 3

Expected result

Reduce the number of traffic accidents on intersections.

Bloc 4

Cross-border added-value

Project requires significant critical mass and involvement of stakeholders from authorities to ensure future market uptake. Typically too big for a single national authority to handle. Furthermore, involving different regions ensures different possible practical and legislative hurdles resulting in a more robust solution.
