Port of Ostend sets the example: self-sufficiency in green energy

Placing big wind turbines in urban areas is no sinecure. As a lead partner of the PECS project, the Port of Ostend has now found a solution to that. With the implementation of a mid-size wind turbine, the port is now able to produce energy needed for its own activities.

Last week’s Thursday, the new turbine was inaugurated in the presence of Flemish Minister for Energy, Bart Tommelein. In his speech, the minister called for additional efforts to take maximum advantage of wind energy:

“The mid-size wind turbine means a new beacon for Ostend. It fits perfectly within the Flemish Wind Strategy: it is placed at a location that first seemed unrealistic, namely the port, and it is now generating energy to the local companies. At the coast we do not have a shortage of wind as a renewable source. It is about time we increase our use of it.”
